La verdadera historia del Buda de Oro.


Hace más de trescientos años, el ejército birmano planeaba  un ataque para invadir Tailandia. En ese momento, el país era conocido como Siam. Los monjes siameses tenían dentro de sus posesiones  la más increíble estatua de Buda. Los monjes estaban decididos a proteger su santuario que tanto significaba para ellos. Estos monjes no le tenían  precio a sus pertenencias por la no  trascendencia del dinero, sino que sabían que los birmanos por su codicia, se detendrían a saquear y robar la estatua debido a su enorme valor monetario. Para proteger la estatua, cubrieron el Buda con 12 centímetros de arcilla y pintada de color dorado. Durante la invasión tristemente, los monjes fueron asesinados y el secreto del Buda permaneció oculto durante dos siglos. El Buda en sí, sin embargo, se mantuvo a salvo.




A mediados de la década de los 50, un monasterio en las orillas del río Chao Phraya, cerca del barrio chino de Bangkok, es reubicado y movido de su sitio, para dar cabida a una nueva carretera. Los monjes dispuestos, se sirven de una grúa para mover la estatua de Buda de  “ arcilla”, una especie de estuco dorado, a su nueva ubicación. La estatua, procedente de Ayutthaya, es levantada por la grúa para llevarla al nuevo lugar, y como era mucho más pesada de lo que se pensaba  comenzó a resquebrajarse y desafortunadamente cedió un cable y la estatua cayó. Los monjes dejan la estatua  y deciden esperar hasta  conseguir un equipo más potente y poder levantar la estatua sin problemas y este mal presagio asustó a todo el mundo, y después de una fuga multitudinaria, la estatua quedó abandonada en el suelo  . Para colmo de males, llegaron las lluvias con una tormenta  que dejó a la ciudad anegada de barro y agua, por lo que los monjes amorosamente cubrieron la estatua con lonas para evitar la humedad. Pasó el tiempo y en la oscuridad de una noche, el monje principal tomó su linterna y salió para asegurarse de que el Buda estaba cubierto adecuadamente. Cuando la luz de la linterna  hiso que brillara una de las grietas que se había formado en la arcilla, vio una luz tenue y brillosa... un reflejo de algo debajo de ese manto de arcilla. De inmediato comenzaron a cincelar cuidadosamente y a sacar fragmentos de barro, lo que hiso que el resplandor fuera  más brillante. Horas más tarde, y con todo el barro removido... los monjes estaban en la presencia de un Buda de oro macizo.






Esta estatua de  una altura de 3m y de un peso de 5,5 toneladas, reside en el templo del Buda de oro en Bangkok, Tailandia. Es la estatua de oro más grande del mundo. Está trabajada en el estilo de Sukhothai (1238-1370) pero podría haber sido fabricada posteriormente.  Su procedencia de la antigua capital Ayutthaya impide considerar una fecha posterior a 1750. El Buda está representado en la tradicional postura del Bhumisparshamudra (tocar la tierra como testigo, la mano derecha hacia el suelo).













Cada año, millones de personas van allí para ver esta magnífica obra de arte y a adorarlo a sus pies. Y pensar, que fue descubierto por razones  impensadas...
